The Story

Through my work, I explore the beauty of the female form in studies, and botanical imagery while considering the use of colour, shape, and line.

Having spent my career creating fabric designs in the fashion industry, colour palettes are the foundation of my practice. The paintings are connected by a serene colour language, and portray a lightness, softness, and calm amongst the chaos of everyday life.

While painting, I observe objects and people as shapes, shadows, patterns, and colour using a harmonious and soothing visual language.

Painting brings me tranquility, and I convey the same sense of connection and moment of pause to the viewer in my depictions of space and movement.

I’m interested in the symbolism and the meaning behind words and imagery, nature and the language of flowers. Flowers and plants can be used to express sentiment, intention, balance and healing. I explore the relationship between people and plants incorporating flora that can connect them with an emotion.

Seeing the world through color palettes I design and create custom surface patterns, all-over prints for fashion, paper, and interiors. I have eighteen years of experience working for major American retail brands, specializing in colour, and print & trend direction. Each painting, art print, or textile design is originally painted by me using watercolour, ink, gouache, or acrylic mediums. Paintings are then scanned at high quality for fine art prints or turned into repeat patterns for fabric and paper printing.

Smudge Studio is derived from my mum’s nickname “Smudge,” a common moniker for people in the UK with the surname Smith - a tribute to my inherited creative legacy. Additionally, smudge signifies mark-making, daubing paint, or a form of cleansing and purification, relating in turn to my calming and reflective aim.
